THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF COMPOST

compostsq.jpg

The health of your garden, your produce and yourself all come down to one very essential ingredient: soil. Building soil that is full of nutrients, moisture, life and fertility is key to growing healthy nutritious plants.

Compost is a game changer when it comes to enriching soil profiles. It helps retain moisture and helps to suppress pests and disease. It reduces the need for chemical fertilisers and encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi. This all works together to create chocolatey, rich nutrient-filled material. Recycling your food scraps is also the fastest way to cut your household rubbish in half.

This workshop will guide you through the basics of composting, worm farming, and bokashi bins. You will learn simple techniques to create and maintain a healthy compost system at home or in a community garden and how to choose the best option for your available space and time, how to recognise and build good soil and the link it creates in your garden and health. In a nutshell you'll get the ins and outs of the biodynamics and foundations of composting, worm farming, and bokashi bins as well as how to start each and maintain them to maximum effect!

The teacher: one of the secret weapons behind the War on Waste'e waste-free street, Justin Bonsey and the crew from The Compost Revolution are making it easy for Australians to turn food scraps into rich soil and liquid fertiliser at home to reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfill.  Because about half of what the average Australian household throws out is compostable organic material, using home composting systems significantly reduces the amount of waste we send to landfill.  It also reduces our impact on climate change because food waste releases harmful greenhouse gases as it breaks down in landfill.

Currently partnering with over 30 councils across Australia, the Compost Revolution is an award-winning platform which educates and equips people to recycle their food scraps at home. Their fun online tutorials and integrated easy ordering system allows residents to choose their composting gear and have it delivered straight to their door.

Co-designed with councils, over the last 6 years the Compost Revolution has grown to become Australia's largest community of composters and worm farmers, diverting over 6,000 tonnes of waste from landfill, avoiding 12,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, and saving councils in excess of 1.5 million in landfill costs.
