LEMONGRASS

Cymbopogon

Lemongrass is native to the tropics, so it requires some protection from the cold. Besides that, it is fairly easy to grow and can be planted in the ground or pots. Best of all, the citronella contained in lemon grass is insect repelling, so planting one near your patio would help keep the mozzies away in summer.

PLANT

Early summer.

HARVEST

All year round. Leave the plant to develop some thick stems before harvesting. Grows 3-5 feet tall.

EAt

The tangy lemon taste of this aromatic herb is essential in Asian cooling, adding flavour to broths, soups and curries. The foliage can be used as herbal tea or chopped up to add a lemon flavour to any recipe.

PRESERVE

Lemongrass stems (uncut) store well in the fridge or freezer for a few weeks. Wrap in the fridge for a longer shelf life.

RECIPES

Turn your lemongrass into this fresh sorbet.
