ORANGE
Citrus × sinensis
There's nothing better than a freshly squeezed orange juice, and with a tree in your backyard there will be nothing stopping you from having a glass with your breakfast every morning. Caring for an Orange tree is not complicated, but you will need a sunny spot and take care to protect the tree from frost if you live in a cold climate.
PLANT
Spring.
HARVEST
It can take 3-5 years for an orange tree to establish itself and grow fruit. Harvest late Autumn to late Spring, depending on variety. Trees can grow between 5 - 7 metres.
EAt
The humble orange juice is a staple to many Australian breakfast tables. But it has so many other uses, too – orange and poppy seed cake, thrown raw in salads or used as a tangy glaze for hams; so it is an everyday supply of sweet freshness to add vibrancy to your dishes.
PRESERVE
Make marmalade of course. You can also dehydrate oranges by thinly slicing them and baking them in the oven or preferably a dehydrator. These dried oranges can then be used to garnish desserts, drinks, eaten dipped in chocolate or crushed to add flavour to sweet treats.
