PEPINO

Solanum muricatum

Pepino is a small shrub with a sprawling habit and makes an excellent ground cover plant. It has a flavor that is reminiscent of cantaloupe and honeydew, a texture that is as crisp as a pear and an orange flesh with small edible seeds that resemble the papaya.

PLANT

Early Spring.

HARVEST

Between September through to November. Ready to harvest when they turn yellow and develop some purple stripes/markings. Size: about 1 metre.

EAt

Pepino melon can be eaten fresh and both their skin and seeds are edible. Include them in a fruit salad morning porridge – basically, treat them like a melon.

PRESERVE

Pepinos can be made into a chutney or sauce to extend their shelf life.
