POMEGRANATE
Punica granatum
Is there a prettier fruit than the ruby red jewels of the Pomegranate? Pomegranates are easy to grow, but patience is key as it can take 5-6 years before they bear fruit. Frost and drought tolerant, they are hardy deciduous or semi-deciduous plants that perform well in all regions of Australia.
PLANT
Spring – avoid planting in Summer or Winter.
HARVEST
Fruit is picked in Autumn when they swell and the skin colours up. Choose the strongest coloured first as fruit will not continue to ripen once picked. Will eventually grow to about 6 metres tall.
EAT
They can be fiddly to eat, but being so full of flavor and bringing a wonderful pop of color to platters and salads, they're worth it!
PRESERVE
Freeze spread out on a tray and then transfer to a bag or container once frozen, to avoid clumping together. Or try making your own pomegranate molasses!
RECIPES
